Recommended Next Steps

Now that you are curious about the benefits to your board if it chooses to go ahead and adopt Policy GovernanceŽ as your style of governing, you are probably wondering about the next steps. Most boards at this point need more information, a chance to study some of the concepts as a whole board, and most importantly an opportunity to have a whole board discussion to get a better indication of what the board desires. Centerboard Associates suggests some steps on how to proceed.

  1. Recommended Reading

Purchase "Basic Principles-Carver Guide # 1" for all board members, the CEO, and senior leadership staff. You may wish to order online by visiting Amazon. Click here to ORDER NOW! Distribute these 26-page booklets a week to 10 days prior to your next board meeting.

  2. Have a Meaningful Board Discussion

At your next meeting set aside as least 30 minutes for the board to discuss their first impressions of the basic principles, and the implications for the board if its agrees to live by them upon adopting the model. It is typical that some members will be excited about the model, and others will be skeptical and wonder why change to this extent will make a difference. The intent of this discussion session is to make sure that all board members have a voice and express their opinions based on what they have read. Please note that:

    • Additional information and study of the model and its implementation will be necessary
    • Proceeding ahead does not require adoption of the model at this time
    • Boards that attempt to adopt the model without outside facilitation may not be successful
    • Successful adoption and practice will require an investment in time and resources

  3. Take the Fast Track to Great Governance!

Centerboard Associates Consultants are graduates of the Policy Governance Academy"! and are knowledgeable on both the conceptual understanding and effective practice of the model. We use the most efficient teaching methods to educate, demonstrate, and coach organizations. Facilitated assistance by a trained consultant is the quickest and most reliable method to learn and practice Policy Governance.

The adoption and implementation of the Policy Governance model by boards requires the commitment of time and resources by a board and its executive. This can usually occur over a six- month period following a facilitated plan. Most boards will experience 75% of the model benefits by the end of this period.

We provide examples of board policies, executive monitoring reports, agendas, and planning to smoothly transition your current experience to the new governance model. We work closely with both the board chairperson and the chief executive officer during this process, as their roles to assure good governance will change and are critical to a smooth adoption process.
